Kampnagel Industries

Hamburg, since 1865

Kampnagel.Sovereign by engineering.

Mandate

Kampnagel Industries develops autonomous systems for land, air, and maritime theatres. A 161-year German engineering lineage. Founded as Nagel & Kaemp in Hamburg, 1865. Returned for the modern theatre.

Doctrine

Structure before speed. Substance before narrative. We build for environments where reliability, resilience, and operational integrity are decisive. Hamburg-engineered. Sovereign by alliance.

Heritage06 eras

From rice mills to harbor cranes to autonomous platforms.

A Hamburg industrial history. From mechanical engineering to cultural institution. Today restored as an industrial company for autonomous systems.

  1. 1865–1900

    The Founding

    The Founding

Nagel & Kaemp, civil engineers, founded in Hamburg by August Christian Nagel and Reinhold Hermann Kaemp. By 1875 a machine factory in Winterhude on the Osterbek. By 1889, a joint-stock corporation. Mobile harbor cranes. Heavy engineering. Industrial origin.

  2. 1900–1930s

    Industrial Powerhouse

    Industrial Powerhouse

One of Germany's most respected manufacturers of ship and harbor cranes. Products installed in ports far beyond Hamburg. The literary model for the machine factory N. K. in Willi Bredel's debut novel of 1930.

  3. 1930s–1945

    The Dark Chapter

    The Dark Chapter

1934: renamed Kampnagel AG. 1939: armaments production under state direction. Grenades, fuses, cartridges. More than 1,000 forced laborers in six company-operated camps. A grave and inseparable part of the company's history. Acknowledged without reservation.

  4. 1945–1970s

    Reconstruction

    Reconstruction

Crane production resumed. International relevance regained. Cranes bearing the Kampnagel name installed in ports across Europe and overseas. Postwar decades stood for durability and technical reliability. Container shipping began to undermine the core market.

  5. 1970s–1981

    Decline and Silence

1968: sold to Demag AG, later absorbed into Mannesmann. Forklifts produced until 1981. McKinsey market analysis: crane production shifts to industrializing countries. 1981: closure announced. The end of more than a century of industrial production.

  6. 21st Century

    The Return

The name did not disappear. The factory halls became Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik, Europe's largest independent production center for the performing arts. The lineage endures. Now reawakened: a German engineering legacy reinterpreted for a new technological era.

Hamburg industrial history

Kampnagel was a machine builder.
Founded 1865. Closed 1981. Reawakened.

The Nagel & Kaemp machine factory shaped ship and harbor crane engineering for more than a century. The Winterhude factory halls were converted in 1981, after closure, into the Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik. Today we are activating the name for the industrial rebuilding of a sovereign European defence technology.
